We’re pleased to announce that starting September 1, Viking Line Cargo offers the option for fossil-free freight transport on all three of our routes.
Last year, we introduced the possibility for our freight customers to choose liquefied biogas bio-LNG (LBG) as a more environmentally friendly fuel alternative on the Turku-Stockholm route. Now, we’re expanding this option to include the Helsinki–Stockholm and Helsinki-Tallinn routes as well.
Thanks to our long-standing partnership with Gasum, Viking Line is increasing purchases of renewable bio-LNG sixfold. Certified European biofuel will be used on Viking Glory and Viking Grace, operating the Turku–Stockholm route. In 2023, we used 10 tonnes of biogas, and last year that figure rose to 600 tonnes. This year, we’re taking a major step forward with a planned usage of at least 3,800 tonnes.
“This marks a natural step forward in our environmental journey, which we've been advancing together with our customers for several years. Fossil-free maritime transport is still rare globally, but at Viking Line we want to show that the green transition in shipping is already underway,” says Freight Director Harri Tamminen.
